Attitude Assessment

Attitude assessment is a kind of assessment that measures the way behaviors affect productivity. Counter-productive behaviors like aggression and dishonesty can harm an organization together with everyone working in the organization, which is why employers need to assess candidates’ attitudes in interviews.

How to Assess Attitude in Interviews

Interviewers can assess the attitudes of candidates by asking relevant questions. The questions should be aimed at identifying qualities such as perseverance, determination, and humility. Here are sample questions interviewers can use to assess the aforementioned qualities:

  • How do you overcome obstacles in business?

This question will help interviewers understand how candidates solve problems and persevere when they face an obstacle. A candidate with a positive attitude will describe an obstacle he/she once faced in a positive way rather than describing it in a negative way.

  • How do you react when work makes you feel overwhelmed?

This question will reveal the way candidates control their emotions in a stressful environment. Interviewers should watch out for answers that suggest aggressive reactions in stressful situations. A candidate with a good attitude will handle emotions maturely and seek positive solutions regardless of the stress the environment imposes on the candidate.

  • Describe the experience you had the last time you worked with a difficult person

This question can help interviewers understand how candidates interact with co-workers and clients, including the difficult ones. A candidate with a good attitude won’t lose professionalism and emotional control while working with a difficult person. Rather, he or she will portray humbleness and compassion while interacting with difficult people.

The above questions are a few examples of questions that can assess candidates’ attitudes as there are several other similar questions we didn’t include.

Why Good Attitude is Important in an Interview

The skills and knowledge a candidate possesses aren’t the only factors to consider in an interview. Attitude should always be one of the major factors interviewers must consider before hiring candidates because of the following reasons:

1. Attitude helps workers get along with one another
Workers need the ability to get along with one another and that can happen only if every worker has a positive attitude. Hence, employers need to verify that every worker they hire has a positive attitude.

2. Employees need a good attitude to be loyal to their company
Disloyalty employees usually don’t work with full commitment. Some of them may even steal their employer’s resources and misuse the company’s private information. Hence, it’s advisable to hire only loyal candidates.
