Code Assessment

Code assessment involves the evaluation of a programmer’s coding skills. There are lots of times when programmers’ skills need to be assessed. For instance, in an interview, recruiters need to assess the coding skills of candidates since resumes are sometimes unreliable.

How to Assess Coding Skills

Here are the technics employers can use to assess coding skills:

1. Review Portfolio
A skilled developer will definitely have an impressive portfolio. The portfolio serves as a good place to start assessing a developer. Portfolio will reveal the number of programming languages candidates understand. It will also reveal the manner and style candidates use to solve problems.

A portfolio can even reveal the diligence of candidates. For instance, a candidate whose portfolio has so many unfinished projects is very unlikely to be diligent.

How to Assess Coding Skills

2. Organize Programming tests
P
rogramming test is one of the best technics for assessing programmers’ skills. If employers set the tests well, they’ll discover how candidates tackle real-world problems. Also, the test will reveal how quickly candidates can find solutions to a problem since the test will be timed.
The final result of a test isn’t the only thing employers should pay attention to. Rather, they should also check other important skills that may not reflect directly in the final result. Some of those skills include the following:
• Ability to write readable codes: A skilled programmer will possess the ability to write readable codes. Codes should look clean and have a proper indentation. Also, ideal codes should not have repetitions or unnecessary code lines, though they can have some comments. In fact, comments help a third party to quickly understand code lines.
• Ability to use easy solutions: A single problem usually has several solutions. Oftentimes, averagely skilled programmers find it hard to come up with simple solutions, so they end up combining too many ideas to solve problems, and hence generate complex solutions. This kind of approach requires a lot of time, which developers may not have to solve urgent real-world problems. In contrast, highly skilled programmers can easily come up with easy solutions and execute them within a very short time.
3. Use Coding Assessment Tools
Coding assessment tools are software and platforms that can assess coding skills. An ideal assessment tool has a lot of automated features, so employers don’t need to set coding tasks manually or review results manually.
